Solstices in the news

I was interviewed by the Sydney Morning Herald about – of all things – the winter solstice. The reporter, Peter Hannam, asked an excellent question about why the solstice isn’t the day with both the latest sunrise and earliest sunset – they are in fact out of phase. I had to go and check up on it before I could explain the equation of time properly. Good work, Peter, for asking a non-trivial question.
